While discussing his role in the favorably early-reviewed The Suicide Squad, Fillion’s interview perhaps inevitably turned to the subject of Uncharted. Having famously wanted to take part in the project, his thoughts on the end of this 12-year film project that switched hands more than an old Pizza Hut would surely be worth hearing. Some might have expected to hear a bit of contempt after so much work was put in, but it turns out he’s as ready as anybody to see this long-awaited treasure.

“My only regret is that we had to wait so very, very long for someone to do something so we could actually see some Uncharted stuff,” Fillion clarified to GAMINGbible. “Other than that, I think all my boxes have been checked. I’m pretty excited to see what they do with that. I love movies and those guys have never let us down; Tom Holland, come on, Mark Wahlberg. We’re gonna have a great time.” While some folks might be a little disappointed to hear there are no hard feelings, others are surely breathing a sigh of relief knowing that the film essentially has the blessing of the man who took part in that truly incredible Uncharted fan film by Allan Ungar in 2018.

Fillion is one of those class acts who everybody seems to like, which rather easily explains why he would (and did) make such an enjoyable Nathan Drake. From his charm in projects like Firefly and Castle to his roguish looks that translated super well in this Deepfake Uncharted 4 video, the man certainly feels right at home in almost every role he plays. In The Suicide Squad, Fillion plays the completely original character The Detachable Kid (TDK), who can detach his own limbs and control them telekinetically. If there was any doubt that this was a James Gunn film, that alone should prove it.

It’s difficult to deny that Fillion would have made a pitch-perfect Nathan Drake, especially after seeing that fan film. After all, it’s sort of an unspoken fun fact that the character of Drake was actually based (at least in part) on Fillion himself. But that’s all in the past and now Holland is the new face of the character. That’s not to say people should just force themselves to move on, it’s more that Holland is well-suited for the role of a younger Drake. Plus, aside from looking the part, he’s a great choice for the Indiana Jones meets James Bond feel of the film.

Anyway, it’s good to know there’s no bad blood there. Knowing that Fillion might hold a grudge could taint the whole experience for a number of moviegoers (at least those who’ve followed the film’s drama over the years like the glorious gossips they are), so that’s just one more point in its favor. It would certainly be nice to see a continuation of Ungar’s fan film, but maybe Uncharted needs to start branching out anyway to stay fresh. On that note, maybe a certain new character introduced at the end of Uncharted 4 could use a game of their own. Just a thought.

Uncharted is set to release in theaters on February 18th, 2022.
