The big news this week is five-time Brickyard winner Jeff Gordon coming out of retirement as the substitute driver for Dale Earnhardt Jr. who is suffering from concussion-like symptoms. Gordon is listed as part of the ‘field’ at 20-to-1 odds at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook — the possibility of Gordon driving was built into the odds....

Ontario County (N.Y.) District Attorney Mike Tantillo announced Tuesday that he would take Stewart’s case over the death of sprint-car racer Kevin Ward Jr. to a grand jury. Stewart’s car struck and killed the 20-year-old Ward, who had walked onto the track and approached Stewart’s car as he drove under caution during an Empire Super Sprints race Aug. 9 at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. The three-time Cup champion has pledged his cooperation....

The final race of the Cup Series regular season had already been postponed from Saturday night to Sunday morning, and the rain began to come out late as drivers tried to make the final push to the playoffs. The rain started to come down, and as it did, the front of the field spun out as it lost traction on the wet tracks. Then, the red flag was brought out....

“Pocono is one of those places where I haven’t had a ton of success," he said in a team press release. “I think right before they repaved it is when I started to figure the old Pocono out and we were starting to run better. Harvick earned his 21st career pole and his fourth of the season. He won this race from the pole position in 2014. “This is one of my favorites to come here,” Harvick said afterward. The race airs Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on NBCSN. While Harvick has already punched his ticket for the NASCAR playoffs, several other drivers on the bubble need a win there to qualify. Hamlin turned in a fast lap of 166.984 mph for his second pole of the season and the 32nd of his career. Hamlin, in his 15th Cup season, will become the 43rd driver to start 500 races in the Cup series when he takes the green flag Sunday at the 1-mile oval. Kyle Larson (166.960) will start second. “I got him (Larson), I’m so happy I beat him,” Hamlin told NBCSN, per NBCSports....

The Los Angeles Times reported late Thursday night that Diaz will return to battle top lightweight contender Dustin Poirier at UFC 230 at Madison Square Garden in New York on November 3. Sources confirmed the matchup to Sporting News. An official announcement is expected to be made on Friday at a press conference in Los Angeles. No main event has been announced as of this writing. Diaz (19-11), who is one of the top attractions in the sport, hasn’t competed since he lost the rematch to McGregor via majority decision in August 2016 at UFC 202....

Naomi and Lana beat the pairings of Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke and Asuka and Charlotte Flair to earn the right to challenge Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler for the tag titles. The match itself was even on all sides, until it seemed as if Charlotte Flair and Asuka had an advantage. However, an untimely distraction from Ric Flair and Lacey Evans, a common recurrence over the past few weeks, allowed Naomi to pin Asuka, who had been abandoned by her partner....
