It’s hard to argue with Ford as the last seven winners at the 2.66-mile track in the Deep South have come from that manufacturer. At the same time though Kyle Busch is on fire and Denny Hamlin has been very good with two wins this season as well. And as many people know, Hamlin is known as the restrictor plate king and there’s no reason to think he won’t factor into the final few laps as he has finished no lower than 14th at Talladega in his last six attempts and has a win on the track as well....

Forty cars will now line up for the YellaWood 500 at 1 p.m. ET Monday (NBCSN, TSN3, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). The race is the second in the Round of 12. Rain delayed the 2 p.m. ET start of the race as the track was left damp. Jet driers traced the 2.66-mile oval and raced against showers in the area in Lincoln, Ala. After 30 Martinsville starts, Earnhardt Jr. finally captured the checkers on the flat half-mile layout last fall. Even though victory had eluded him for so long, he had always been very respectable at the track and came close to winning a few times. Expectations were high coming into this week, not just because of last year’s win, but also because he was using the same chassis. However, during Saturday’s practices he couldn’t muster a lap better than 18th quickest in either session....

Regular-season champ Kyle Busch, the 2015 series champion, held a slight lead in the NASCAR standings heading into the first playoff race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In a thrilling finish, the Team Penske driver bumped Martin Truex Jr. out of the way on the final lap, got sideways, then virtually slid across the finish line for the win. It’s the 20th win of Logano’s career and his second this season, but more importantly, it clinches him a spot in the Championship 4 at Homestead in the playoff finale next month. “I was just trying to be as defensive as I could,” Logano told NBCSN afterward....

Last year’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 winner again took home the checkered flag. Although Truex didn’t enter as a favorite, he certainly drove like one after leading for 58 of the 90 laps. The win also marked Truex’s third at the raceway. Kyle Busch finished second and was close to catching the leader in the final laps but ultimately couldn’t find a way past Truex. Ryan Blaney, Matt DiBenedetto and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top five....

The race went well into the night and saw Erik Jones take home the checkered flag in his 100th start. “I can guarantee I ain’t going to bed,” Jones said on the TV broadcast after the race. It’s the second to last race before the playoffs, which makes every position count even more, especially for players on the bubble. Kyle Larson finished in second while Kyle Busch — who led for 118 laps before slamming into the wall allowing Jones to take the lead — finished in third, Kevin Harvick fourth and Brad Keselowski fifth....

NASCAR officials decided against using a tapered spacer that would have limited the air flow in the Sprint Cup engines and reduced horsepower from about 850 to at least 750 and possibly lower. The changes that were announced are for all tracks except Daytona and Talladega, where NASCAR will continue to restrict air flow with plates and use a different aerodynamic package. And fans didn't have to wait very long for it to happen, either. Early in the first quarter, Smith picked up a first down. Talib picked up Smith's leg and wouldn't let it go. The two nearly came to blows. Talib was docked 15 yards for unncessary roughness. The tension escalated a few plays later on the same drive when they got into a shoving match. Whatever halftime entertainment the Panthers have planned, it probably won't be as exciting as these two squaring off....

Dubbed “Ingenuity,” the unique vehicle is a small, autonomous aircraft that will be deployed on the Martian surface by the rover after it arrives at its destination in February 2021.
